SUMMARY: stupid Sun serial connections

Great replies, and fast, from too many to mention! Thanks to all...

Consensus is that a standard passthrough Cat5 cable will do the job,
which is perfect (those, my network guy has a box of from all his
Cisco equipment).

Now to learn the finer points of tip, and I'm off to work!
