Thank you to everyone who have responded to my question.

Many suggested i use format instead of prtvtoc to see the partition of
my current disks.
tried it...and it helped...
thanks.

i am very grateful to those who took the time to explain to me the
output from prtvtoc.
from that i was able to understand the actual usage of my disks...

from the replies there are 3 reasons i was missing "10GB" of disk
space...
which turned out to be actually just 8.4GB
1. difference in declared GB of disks in brochures and the actual GB of
disk (1000 vs 1024)
2. 10% reserve space for root and daemons, logging, inodes info, etc
which can be tuned using tunefs
3. prtvtoc output for disk 2 showed several unmounted partitions...which
totalled to around 4GB of lost space.

actual capacity in bytes = 72834231296 = 67.8 "true" GB
actual used space
1984564 / = 1.89GB
962573 /usr = 0.9GB
578404 /var = 0.55GB
28354024 /joan = 27GB
27330544 /appl = 26GB
swap = 3GB (from swap -l)
TOTAL = 59.34GB

unmounted partitions from disk 2 -
* Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory
       0 2 00 0 4096602 4096601
       1 3 01 4096602 6144903 10241504
       2 5 00 0 71127180 71127179
       3 7 00 10241505 1230714 11472218
       4 4 00 11472219 2048301 13520519
       5 8 00 13520520 2048301 15568820
       6 0 00 15568821 55526580 71095400 /appl
       7 0 00 71095401 31779 71127179

partition 0 = 1.95GB
partition 1 = 3GB (could be mirrored swap - still have to find out)
partition 3 = 0.59GB
partition 4 = 1GB
partition 5 = 1GB
partition 7 = 0.015GB
total unmounted partitions = 7.555GB

67.8 - 7.555 - 59.24 = 1.0005GB

i still cannot find this 1GB space...i can live with that.
