Thanks to Tom Jones <tjones@statesman.com> and
Allan West <allan@clas.ufl.edu> for your input.
Basically the Marketing part number is a software or
hardware package of components that are available only
to sales rep with the idea of selling it to a
customer.
For example, a sun blade 100 package, a Veritas Volume
Manager software package, or 1 training credit. It
usually starts with a letter, such as X3538A.
A hardware part number is more detailed to the
component level, and geared more toward the FE who
orders the replacement part. It usually starts with
a number. For example, pn # 501-2654 for a 128 MB DRAM
Marketing part number can be obtained from a Sun sales
rep, a Sun reseller, or at http://store.sun.com
(in the search products window)
Hardware part number can be obtained from the Sun's FE
handbook or the FE CD or on the H/W component itself.
