We use it here, installed on our print server. You just specify the print server on the clients (use Admintool on Solaris systems), works like a charm. In fact, I have done so for years, starting with Solaris 2.6. There was an add-on package from Sun for Solaris 2.5.1. It was not support before then. You don't have to have the printers defined on your NIS server. Your printers.conf can even be merged from several Solaris print servers. It works great. I forget where I learned how, but I'm pretty sure it was a Sun document so a search for printers.conf and NIS at docs.sun.com should help you. In the simplest form, you simply create a NIS map from the local /etc/printers.conf, as you seem to want to do.
