thanks for everyone's help, even Sun's, but I think the machine is just "in a bad way" and there is not rhyme or reason for rpcbind not running causing login to not spawn from inetd.  Neither inetd.conf nor /etc/services was changed.

bit of a panic here - I did the following on a 2.6 box and now the firewall is running, but I can't get a remote login prompt for telnet.  whatever did I do wrong?
