But it's nice to hear that it is available on OS 8 by default.

I've been using this for the past 5 years or so, since Solaris 2.6, and it has
always done well.

VNC I believe is like pcanywhere or timbuktu, except it has a very small
footprint.

The answer is screen :) It seems that Solaris 8 comes
with screen program by default. If you cannot find it,
do a google search. Many also mentioned that vnc can
do that too, though I have not yet tried.
