Summary: tar checksum error on tape

Many thanks to all who replied. Jeff Horwitz replied last night with
the solution; gnutar.

Apparently this tape was made with gnutar even though it is labeled as
tar format. The error I received is common in this case since stock
Solaris tar can't handle the file size.

As of this morning there were many other replies awaiting me, most with
the same solution. Thanks again.
