Question, is pipe a redirect?

Yes and no.

The conclusion is that <, >, <<, >> directs output to files or directs input 
from files.

I (pipe) is a pipe in that it pipes(directs) output from one program to 
another.

To play it safe, I would say(judging from all the responses) to call | a pipe 
and not a redirect, strictly speaking.
