Thanks to everyone that responded. The overwhelming consensus is that there is no relationship between any number you can get from the operating system and the sticker on the back. (Bummer!) The one departure was a suggestion that I try "sysinfo", a utility you can get from http://www.magnicomp.com/sysinfo/sysinfo.shtml While sysinfo is a nice tool, the "Serial Number" that it provides is not the serial number recognized by Sun. Perhaps it is the serial number of the system board, but there is no relationship between that and Sun's serial number.
