SUMMARY: Netbooting problem.

Thanks to the many for their replies; the promlem turned out to be 
something so simple that overlooking it was simply Way Too Easy.

Thus, a summary:

When netbooting, the lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf relating to things
network need 'files' before 'nisplus [NOTFOUND=return]', instead 
of the other way 'round (as with a normal NIS+ client).
