I have progressed : with a graphical KVM emulator driven by its IPMI card, I get the interactive installer going. When I used the serial-over-Ethernet IPMI interface, the installer just beeped and then went on via the graphical console port. Well... what the heck. I can use the JKVMI viewer to manage this box's install remotely, and that's what counts. Thanks anyway to Anthony D'Atri for responding to my initial query. There are still SunManagers alive on this globe... btw: it's a Supermicro motherboard with onboard IPMI module.
