Correction, courtesy of John Horne. The -N option works for Sol-9 as
well even though it is not listed in the man pages. So disregard the
message below try the -N option to add the NP password (I knew SUN would
never officially support vi'ing the shadow file)

Common consensus is that on Solaris 9 you have to vi the shadow file and
manually take out the encrypted password and insert NP. As the -N option
only came with sol-10, and there is no other option in the password
command to make a no password account.
