SUMMARY: grab output from spawned process

Thanks to Chris Hoogendyk and John Julian for replying

I went with Johns great and simple approach using 2 ssh options i didnt
know about.

ConnectTimeout=20 BatchMode=yes  This has worked a dream

and i now set VAR to be the output of the command and pipe the error
elsewhere. No need to kill spawned processes
