Thanks to all that replied, most were pointing me to documentation that I
had already read and tried. I guess theoretically you are supposed to be
able to pop in the CD, boot cdrom and choose upgrade when the installation
starts, however I was only given the option to do an initial install. The
fix was to mount the cdrom run pkginfo | grep 64 and look at all the
available 64 bit packages, pick the ones that pertain to your install. For
me the list was (I am not running X windows on this box):
SUNWamix
SUNWcarx.u
SUNWcg6x.u
SUNWcprx.u
SUNWcslx
SUNWcsxu
SUNWcvcx.u
SUNWesxu
SUNWffbx.u
SUNWhmd
SUNWhmdu
SUNWhmdx
SUNWidecx.u
SUNWifbx.u
SUNWipcx
SUNWkvmx.u
SUNWlclx
SUNWlocx
SUNWm64.u
SUNWm64cf
SUNWm64x.u
SUNWnamox
SUNWpdx
SUNWpiclx
SUNWpmux
SUNWuiu8
SUNWulcfx
SUNWusx.u
SUNWuxlcx
SUNWvolux
TSIpgxx.u

Then install the latest patch cluster.

My ipfilter module broke (of course because it was built for a 32 bit
kernel) - I am still trying to compile that one for 64 bit (see next
posting ;-})

My original post was:
I am trying to upgrade my 32 bit Solaris 8 installation to 64 bit. I don't
have the original installation media, I downloaded the latest Sol 8 isos
but when I boot from CD I am not given the upgrade option, only initial
install. Does anyone know what packages I need to install to enable 64
bit? System is an E250 with a single 400Mhz ultra II processor.
