SUMMARY: Using MD5 for passwords (to defeat the 8 character limit)

Thanks to all who responded.

There still does not seem to be an easy method for going beyond 8
characters.

Some people told me modify /etc/default/password, but my understanding is
that this file only affects the minimum number of characters required for
a password to be accepted by the OS.

Another person mentioned PAM and porting it from Linux. I dont have time
to port code from one OS to another. I was looking for a quicker
solution. And as mentioned PAM is not used in all applications.

My assumption is that npasswd will not do the trick.

Thanks again.

Previous message|
Previous message| Hello all:
Previous message|
Previous message|
Previous message| Another subscriber posted a topic back in January 2002,
Previous message| "Summary: Longer than 8 character passwords under Solaris."
Previous message|
Previous message|  ===================
Previous message| Is there anyway to have Solaris
Previous message| accept and interpret more than 8
Previous message| character passwords?
Previous message|
Previous message|
Previous message| The answer is the only way that you
Previous message| can achieve this is to replace the
Previous message| password command with something that
Previous message| would not use the crypt function to
Previous message| encrypt the passwords for Solaris. A
Previous message| suggestion was to go to MD5 type
Previous message| hashes for generating passwords like
Previous message| are supported in npasswd. A few
Previous message| suggestions also came through to
Previous message| armor access to the servers by
Previous message| allowing SSH only and not allowing
Previous message| telnet. Needless to say. I was
Previous message| disappointed to find this answer.
Previous message|  ===================
Previous message|
Previous message|
Previous message| Should I rely on npasswd or is there another way?
Previous message|
Previous message| Just looking for an update.
