Thanks to all who replied: Larye Parkins, Frank Velazquez, Jay Lessert.

This is it, more or less. Mentor confirmed that one of their engineers has
seen the same problems on his SB100, and that it is specific to the M64 ATI
 Rage gfx hardware.

The underlying problem is a patch, although neither the X jumbo patch 108652,
nor the kernel patch 108528, as I originally assumed, but patch 108606, which
is incidentally not part of the Recommended cluster:

Patch-ID# 108606-26
Keywords: PGX m64 driver window config
Synopsis: SunOS 5.8: M64 Graphics Patch
Date: Aug/06/2002

Solaris 8 02/02 includes 108606-18, which according Mentor is exactly the
revision that broke everything. The problem was finally fixed with 108606-22,
and we are now using 108606-26 w/o problems.
