Thanks to Neil hunt,John Martinez for the help , ssh -l user name hostname 
-p port no  worked for me although i have some other problem in n/w.

The command for ssh is as follows:
ssh -l username hostname
or ssh username@hostname

If the server is running sshd, then all you would need to do from the 
client is 'ssh <servername>' and it should work.
