SUMMARY: patching the ge driver

I got a me too, a hell no, and a probably not.  Not the answers I was
hoping for, oh well.

I am not able to even test the potential fix as it involves unplumbing
the interface (which would give me the same heartache as a reboot) so I
will resort to rebooting.
