FINAL SUMMARY: sendmail and anti-relaying

Hi again, Gurus.
Thanks for all the help and the quick responses. Chris Cariffe, David
Foster, Steve Hammond, Tom Frerichs, Paul Keller, and Rainer Heilke were the
respondents to my partial summary question where I asked for more help.
Just about everybody said to install a relay-domains file. Now I already
had that file in place, but I was still getting the relaying denied error
message. I got some things to check:
Did I HUP sendmail? Yes, I had done that.
Do I have another host that I forward to? No.
Check the syslog for more clues? I did, but that wasn't the answer.
The winner was to check the file and see if the line for the
relay-domains was commented out or not. Turns out that was the problem.
Once I uncommented the line and HUP'ped the sendmail daemon, it worked.
Partial summary answer and new question:
I got answers (so far) from the following people:
Rich Kulawiec, Steve Hammond, sysadmin (no name attached to the email), Tim
Chipman, Jordi Vidal, pgm, Nicolas Dorfman, Thomas Frerichs, Doug, Floer,
Steve, Chapman, and Steve Sandau.
Most suggested replacing sendmail 8.8.5 with at least 8.9.1 (various people
had some other ideas, but I'll put those in the completed summary). Anyway,
I got 8.9.1 from sunfreeware installed. I used the old 8.8.5
file to check it out and relaying from outside was still allowed. Not good.
So I put the default configuration file that came with the 8.9.1
package in place. Now I'm getting this message:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
    (reason: 550 <>... Relaying denied)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to
>>> RCPT To:<>
<<< 550 <>... Relaying denied
550 5.1.1 <>... User unknown
Now two questions more. grant is a legitimate name on the mail server, so
why is sendmail saying "Relaying denied" and "User unknown". This is
happening for all mail on this network. Please reply ASAP as email needs to
get through!
