Summary: Sun in coma

Original problem description.
=============
When idle a system stops working, does not respond to the network (even to
ping), sends no signal to the monitor, and does not respond to STOP-A. The
power is on, and sounds like the drive is spinning. The only thing that
helps is the power cycle. After that there is no dump produced, so there is
nothing to analyze. I have installed Explorer (diagnostic tool from Sun) on
the failed systems, and it showed nothing wrong with the them. The VTS
showed no problem too. It happens rarely, but it is quite annoying. This is
not related to the automatic shutdown when idle since this feature is
disabled.
=============

I still do not know the exact reason the condition happens. After upgrading
all systems to SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-12 from the original level SunOS 5.8
Generic 108528-06 and OBP (firmware) from ver. 4.0.5 to 4.5 we observed no
more Sun in coma.

The champion is Stephen Beaton who wrote:

If these Suns run the UltraSparc IIe CPU you need to make sure you have a
kernel revision 108528-12 or greater.

Rahulkumar Patel and Jonathan Jackson sent me similar suggestion.

=============
Now some details. The problem was happening on brand new 15 Sun Blade-100
desktops. Since they were new systems from Sun I assumed everything should
be the latest and greatest, and neglected to apply Sun recommended patches
(is there a lesson here?). On top of that we received OS with the Japanese
localization, the need for which is not very common in California. The coma
condition happened 6 times in two months, almost all on weekends, always on
idle systems. The power management on all systems was disabled. The
/etc/system was not modified, it did not have "snooping=1".

Sun tols us that we are the only customer experiencing this problem. Since
after power cycle there were no core file I suspected that it happens to
others too, but nobody reports since there is nothing to show.
I received plenty of responses with good suggestions and instances of the
same problem on different systems.

The coma happened to the following systems besides ours Blade 100
SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-06 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2 Netra X1 machine
SunBlade 1000
420R running with solaris 7
420 running 2.6
E250
E450
UltraAX-e2
e220r running sol7 (Generic_106541-14
E420R
Sun Enterprise 250 Model 2400 Solaris 8, Kernel patch rev -08
Ultra-60 from Tatung with Sol. 8 Rev. 5.

I will forward the info to Sun.

Thanks a lot to everybody responded.
