Original Post:
After adding a yp slave to a long existing NIS domain I now get 2 entrys
when i do a ypcat hosts | grep slave-server. doing the same thing for older
slaves returns dup entries for them as well, sometimes 4 entries for 1
server. the slaves work fine. is this normal? is it actually finding it
in two places? any insight would be helpful.

Summary:

My inexperience with NIS is showing. ypcat is returning an entry for every
alias. a ypcat -k shows what is going on. thanks to all.
