Two commands can be used to see what version of samba is installed on the
system:

smd -V
smbstatus

Apparently, a Samba version 2.0.6 or higher is needed in order for
Windows2000 machine to be able to communicate with a server properly.

Thanks to all who replied. Your replies are appreciated and have enabled
a quick pinpoint of the problem.
