Summary: can ping but cannot telnet into the box

Once again, I got more than a dozen replies to my question. Thank you all.

The general consensus is that telnetd was trying to perform a reverse lookup
of the incoming IP, but the DNS config on cdrom doesnt match our network.
It will eventually time out and give me login prompt.
