The correct answer was to bring the system down to single user mode and
remove the "v"erify from the command line. The verify still failed in single
user mode but I was able to restore files from the tape. Thank you for the
quick response.

Subject: Archive Python 4mm dump density and length for SunOS 4.1.3

Does anyone have the correct values for density and length to make dump work
properly under SunOS 4.1.3. I am using a 4mm Archive Python (Conner model #
CTD8000R-S) and 3M imation 4mm DDS-90 data tape. The tape is capable of 2G
or 4G compressed. using the command
"dump 0dsfuv 42500 1000 /dev/rst0 /dev/sd2c" produces the following output.

DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Fri Jan 7 08:15:27 2000
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/sd2c to /dev/rst0
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
  DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
  DUMP: estimated 188200 blocks (91.89MB) on 0.48 tape(s).
  DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
DUMP: level 0 dump on Fri Jan 7 08:15:27 2000
  DUMP: Tape rewinding
DUMP: Finished writing last dump volume
  DUMP: Starting verify pass
DUMP: Tape verification error 31 feet into tape 1
DUMP: NEEDS ATTENTION: Do you want to rewrite?: ("yes" or "no")

The dump completes but the verification always fails. I have tried different
tapes and values for the length and density and the only thing that change's
is how many feet into the verification dump fails.
