Here is a summary of responses regarding how to view pt_cnt via adb and
thanks to all for their responses

you can simply do ls -al /dev/pts | wc -l and that should tell you the
number which shouldbe aprox. what it has in /etc/system
___________________________
At unix prompt:
# crash
dumpfile ..
>pty <-- type this
___________________________
# adb -k /dev/ksyms /dev/mem

then you can see message like...
physmem 7ddc
then type pt_cnt/D

the result looks like
pt_cnt:
pt_cnt: 48
Cntl-d to exit
________________________
echo pt_cnt/D | adb -k
physmem f7e1
pt_cnt:
pt_cnt: 48

If this setting has taken but the /dev/pts devices aren't there, make
sure to run "drvconfig; devlinks. You need to reboot after changing
/etc/system with "boot -r". If you forget the "-r" you can run drvconfig;
devlinks after booting
