SUMMARY: SS20 GDM-20D10 monitor on Ultra-5 anyone ?

Hi,

The consensus is, that it should work without problems. Some people have
done it and it works. The FrameBuffer FAQ has more details:

    http://bul.eecs.umich.edu/~crowej/sunfaq/FrameBuffer.html

Apparently I need to check that the new Ultra-5 has a PGX24 built in
graphics and not the old PGX graphics. Also for 1280x1024, the color depth
is limited to 8 bits. I'll try to purchase an appropriate adapter cable
along with the new Ultra-5.

Thanks to Chris Eslinger <eslingc@atd.sprintcorp.com>

          Richard Smith <rc.smith@ibm.net>

for their replies which I'm citing below.

Thanks again everybody and have a nice weekend.

this mode is supported, according to:

http://bul.eecs.umich.edu/~crowej/sunfaq/FrameBuffer.html#5

(pay attention to the PGX for older ultra5's, and the PGX24 if you're getting
a new ultra5)

no VGA text mode. The "console" is rendered in graphics mode, just like any
other Sun.

Tom,

This is exactly what we did. We took the monitor (GDM-20D10) from a
SparcClassic and put it on an Ultra5 without any troubles. I don't know
if runs at 1280x1024 or only at the old 1152x900.

We purchased the adapter cable directly from Sun ($66 Canadian / $45 US)

The graphics card we have is "the default", described by the "sysinfo"
command as:

        m640 is a "PGX PCI 8-bit [m64]" frame buffer

Being very informative, "sysinfo" describes the monitor as:

        monitor0 is a video monitor

Cheers,

We have attached these same monitors to our Ultra-10 without problem.
I feel pretty confident you'll be OK with the Ultra-5.

Subject: SS20 GDM-20D10 monitor on Ultra-5 anyone ?

Hi,

We got an old SS20 with a GDM-20D10 (365-1324) monitor (the one with the
remote control in the middle) and we're thinking about converting the
SS20 to a server and buying an Ultra-5 instead as the workstation, as
the Ultra-5 boxes are currently rather cheap for Universities.

Now the question is: will the GDM-20D10 monitor work on the Ultra-5. I
know that I need at least an SVGA to DB13W3 cable but this is not the
problem.

The specs. of the GDM-20D10 on

     http://saturn.tlug.org/sunstuff/ffmonitor/GDM-20D10.html

say that it can sync. to these frequencies:

  1076 x 824 71.7kHz 76Hz 108MHz
  1196 x 938 71.1kHz 76Hz 135MHz
  1152 x 900 61.8kHz 66Hz 94.5MHz
  1152 x 900 71.8kHz 76Hz 108MHz
  1280 x 1024 71.8kHz 67Hz 118MHz
  1280 x 1024 81.1kHz 76Hz 135MHz

We're currently running the monitor at 1280x1024@76Hz and we'd like
to continue to use this mode on the Ultra-5.

Anyone any idea if the standard Ultra-5 graphics board can provide this?
If not, what graphics board would be required? What about the console
mode of the Ultra-5? Does it use VGA text mode?

All provided, of course, that I get the appropriate adapter cable.

Thanks // Tom
