Following that is the dialogue about ^D for regular startup or root
passwd
for system maintenance. ^D goes nowhere,
Giving passwd yelds:

-sh: /usr/sbin/quota: not found
-sh: /bin/cat: not found
-sh: /bin/mail: not found
...
where this comes from, I know not. It is an Ultra 5.
A look at /sbin/rcS does not seem to show any changes, at least not
by the
date stamp.
Most respondents listed through the usual maintenance tricks... fsck,
checking links, checking mount points and the vfstab,
etc.
Hats off to "ganeshan". The machine is a firewall. He indicated that
CheckPoint's FW-1 install is broken, and
suggested methods to correct the CheckPoint-Induced problem.
