Special thanks to Derek Terveer, who gave me a good "mt" command to work with:
"I believe that the dump command always states that it is rewinding, but
if you do a "mt -f /dev/rmt/1n status" on tst2-a after the dump, it may
actually be where you expect it..."
So, it seems to be almost unanimous, the tape isn't rewinding. It just
says it is. What an interesting feature. Here are a few of the responses.
~How do you know that "in fact the tape DOES rewind"
~The dump message says that it rewinds, but in *fact*
~it does not. I am on solaris.
~How do you know? Because dump tells you so in its output? Don't believe
~a word, it ALWAYS claims to rewind the tape (and I did the multi-FS-tape
~restores to prove different ;-).
~Are you sure that it's really rewinding? Dump always says that it is
~rewinding the tape at the end of a run, but that is a lie. It just closes
~the device, knowing that it will rewind if you don't use the non-rewind
~device.
