Hi all,

Thanks to shams, Brent Callaghan, Dan Penrod and the rest who replied.

WebNFS is quite a new thing from what i see. Currently, among the two popular browser (MS, Netscape), neither one of them can support WebNFS. Only the Sun HotJava browser support it untill Netscape Navogator 5 is coming. Also i got to know that Mosaic 2.6 or 2.7 does support WebNFS.

i have included all the replies below and my original questions.

        Hi Derrick,

        Answer to your 3:

SUN has special link dedicated to this topic.
        http://www.sun.com/webnfs/index.html

OR simply search on www.SUN.com and put word
webnfs and you will get a lot of links related to
this topic. There is also white paper located at
        the same site. Try...

Since this is a brand new implementation and you may
        not get that much info.

Aside, Hummingbird's NFS products does support Webnfs
        protocol.

Netscape Navigator 5.0 will support NFS URL's. We are also working
on a plug-in for Internet Explorer.

You can use WebNFS as a file transfer protocol (perhaps via a browser)
but you can also use WebNFS enabled Unix and PC clients to mount
"public" fileaystems and run executables. WebNFS is just a fast way
to bind to the server - once that's done, a client can do anything
that a regular NFS client can do.

Try www.sun.com/webnfs

Somewhere I've got a Mosaic (version 2.6 or 2.7) that supports webnfs.

There's more information about webnfs available at:

http://playground.sun.com/pub/nfsv4/

Here's a SUMMARY I wrote on this subject back in March. Doesn't look
like anyone's supporting the protocol... not even Sun!!!

Maybe things have progressed in the last 6 months and you'll get some
new insight. I'd love to take advantage of WEB-NFS rather than
Microsoft's alternative CIFS.

We've sort of taken that approach lately. We're test driving Syntax's
TotalNet (aka TAS) which came bundled on your Solaris 2.6 with a single
user licence. TAS will run on your Sun file server and speak various
file sharing protocols natively, including NFS (obviously), SMB (which
allows all of your Win'95 and NT machines to share it natively), IPX
(which allows all of your Novell clients to see it natively), and
Appleshare (allowing all of your Macs to see it natively). Basically
the goal is to replace our Novell and NT fileservers with a Sun server
without having to install or maintain anything on the client-side.

Hope you'll let me know if you get some good answers.
