SUMMARY: DLT Configuration Woes

My original question was, more or less, 'what is the correct st.conf
entry for a DLT4000'?

Curiously, there seems to be no authoritative answer. Jim Ennis, Bismark
Espinoza and Stacy Lindberg sent in the following:

tape-config-list="SUN DLT4000", "Quantum DLT 4000", "QDLT";
QDLT =1,0x36,0,0xD639,4,0x80,0x81,0x82,0x83,2;

Alas, this works no better than having no st.conf entry at all. Doug
Purdy sent the similar:

DLT = 1,0x36,0,0xd639,1,0x00,0

which I haven't yet tried. Ronald Loftin sent the subtle variant:

DLT =1,0x36,0,0xD639,4,0x80,0x81,0x82,0x83,2;

which also remains to be tried.

Rachel Polanskis suggested that patch 103857-13 might solve the problem.
I can't test this out at the moment, as I've lost our registration info
for SunSolve, and it's not a public patch.

which explains what the various settings do, and offers the following
(different again) config string:

dlt4000-data = 1, 0x33, 0, 0x21d, 4, 0x80, 0x81, 0x82, 0x83, 2;

Finally, Mariel Feder suggested I clean the heads. Sure. Like I didn't
think of that ;)

In summary, then, I've tried one of those six suggested config strings,
and had no luck. (The symptom when using ufsdump is 'Write error 29 feet
into tape'. It's always 29 feet for some reason.) I'll be trying the
other five over the next few days and let you know how I get on. If
those don't work, I'm stumped (Sun Support have already pronounced
themselves baffled, after replacing the drive unit once). Thanks to
everyone who wrote back. I'd appreciate more information about the patch
that Rachel suggested, if anyone has it.
