There's pkg you can get from <http://sunfreeware.com/>. Here's the blurb on
the pkg you want:
> TeX Suite of Programs
> Version 3.14159. The entire TeX suite including TeX, LaTeX, etc. For
> more on installation of TeX, see FAQ Q9 and the TeX installation on the
> download instructions page.
> texmf.tar.gz TeX package (18,405,001 bytes).
> original v3.14159 source code (5,146,022 bytes).
> sizelist.ps size all the files in this TeX distribution (79,314
bytes).
> tapehier.ps description of directory contents (162,785 bytes).
> README.TeX3.14159 standard TeX README file (48,415 bytes).

Look for a teTeX distribution. I am not certain if that is binary or
source, but it required little or no configuration on my side. Worst
case was a "./configure --prefix=/dest/dir" and a "make install".
This is from memory from about 2+ years ago, though, so YMMV.

Good luck,
Brian

The teTeX distribution by Thomas Esser -- available at any CTAN site.

(Just as an aside - all you need *is* tex, LaTeX is fully portable)
Anyway, the single best distribution for all common Unix derivatives is
teTeX. Don't be fooled by the version number (0.4), it is completely stable.

You can obtain teTeX from your nearest CTAN mirror (start from
http://www.ctan.org/), e.g.

    ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/distrib/

In the distrib directory is a file called INSTALL.bin. It contains all
instructions you need on what to download and how to perform the installation
steps. Its a good idea to download all archives (except for unneeded binaries)

listed there unless you're really pressed for disk space.

There are binaries for Solaris 2.4 and 2.5 (which will run on 2.6 and 2.7) for

both x86 and SPARC (you did not state which Solaris binary you wanted) along
with gazillions of other ports.

The beauty of this is that you can install multi-platform binaries which all
use the bulk of the portable LaTeX system. On my systems, SunOS, Solaris,
Linux, HPUX and IRIX users are all served from a single distribution.

       HTH
