Many thanks for the multitude of replies I received. My original query
can be found at the end of this message.

The problem turned out to be an assumption of mine.

<sarcasm mode on>
I ASSUMED, when I asked my vendor for Solaris 2.6 for the Sparc 5
that I ordered from him, that he would ship a version that actually
worked with that Sparc. Silly me.
<sarcasm mode off>

I was installed the August 1997 release of Solaris 2.6, and I need
the March 1998 release, as so many people graciously pointed out.

attached mail follows:

I have a brand new Ultra 5 workstation (architecture sun5u). I installed
a CD-ROM drive in it. Because I don't like the way the default installation
of Solaris 2.6 partitions disks, I wanted to wipe out the original
installation and reinstall the OS.

In the past, I'd do this by putting the Solaris CD in the drive,
hitting STOP-A and typing 'boot cdrom'. That didn't work, because I
got the error:

boot: cannot open /kernel/unix

I flipped open the Troubleshooting chapter Solaris 2.6 Information Library
and it says that, to fix this problem, you reset the boot file in the PROM
to " " (blank).

I hit STOP-A, and entered 'setenv boot-file " "'. I then did 'boot cdrom' and
the same message comes up.

I doubled checked the drive, and I do have the right CD in the drive.

Has anyone run into this before? I get the feeling I'm missing something
obvious, and I'll feel like an idiot when I learn the answer.
