Problem solved. As Peter mentioned, the {ut}tmp[x] files are corrupted. I
emptied all files. Thanks to

I noticed that 2.6's syslogd was crashing. I havn't yet found a patch for
this.

Sounds like the file may be corrupted. The tools to read the files will
get a certain ways along and then crap out on a read. Run the following
commands and try logging in:
cd /var/adm
mv lastlog lastlog.old ; mv wtmp wtmp.old ; mv wtmpx wtmpx.old
mv utmp utmp.old ; mv utmpx utmpx.old
touch lastlog utmp utmpx wtmp wtmpx ; chown adm wt*
