Once I ran the dump interactively it was obvious what was happening.
It turns out the dump was failing for other reasons, and trying 
to open STDIN for input to ask if I wanted to abort the dump.
I also have some new dump parameters to try on my 4mm drive to 
see if it fixes the problem.
