SUMMARY: a proposal

I got about 40-50 answers and everything is here now. Make a judgment by
yourself. I don't need to say more. Thanks everyone!

David,
I don't think so. It's too bad that they don't summarize, but I don't
think a list would be too useful to me. On the other hand, if "the list
server" could automatically send out a gentle prod after n days (perhaps
n=14) without a Summary, that might be interesting.

I like the sound of the suggestion, but suspect it would only lead to
trouble. There is a small number of the usuall suspects who abuse the
list by asking RTFM type questions and not summarizing. If you were
really interested in spending your time doing this I suggest the
following. Document the abuse, show the
number of requests vs. the number of summaries. Publish that
documentation with the hitlist of loosers. With documented proof
nobody should be able to claim unfair treatment. Publish your list
monthly to the sun-managers list. And do not play favorites under any
circumstances. Flame your buddies as well as the loosers.
Good Luck,
Rick

I just sent a warning to someone on the list who asks tons of questions,
but never posts summaries. I warned her that if she continues I was
going to post my concerns about her on the list. So, my answer is "yes".
David S. Foster

geez, you must be bored. :-)
Seriously, though, I think it'd be OK to send people a reminder or two
that they still owe the list a summary...and it might even be fun to
develop an agent to do this automatically...but that's about as far as I
would take it. No need to go the whole 'hall of shame' route.
Just my $0.02 worth.

Let me know how much flaming you get over this posting! But I agree,
that if you don't summarize you should be revoked that privilege of
posting questions. Also, a little secret I learned while in the Army --
NEVER, NEVER Volunteer...;-)
Rich

******

I agree, this list is far less productive if the participants do not
summarize.
Peter Polasek

******

Yes
Jon Hayden

******

As one who would probably be on the list, I say yes! Maybe it will make
me get off my butt (or stay on it?) and get the Summaries posted.
-eric

******

Yes, if someone does that many times, I find it rather annoying. As for
the "punishment", I'm not sure.
Patrick

******

Yes. Most definitely.
--Marty

******

Sounds good to me.
Tom Dean

******

How about those guys who waste our bandwidth with whining about people
who don't take the time to summarize?
Craig Glover

******

dave - hmmmm interesting idea but do you think it would do any real
good? i get very frustrated as well when i see someone ask a question
that i have as well and then never see the summary of it.
annoying.
Ian

******

Why do you feel it necessary for you to enforce the list's charter? Do
you enforce the speed limit by driving in the left-hand lane at the
speed limit? Fercrissakes, don't you have real work to do?
Tim Evans

******

Being put on a list is appropriately severe punishment.
I say "YES".
Les

******

How about us "guys" who only *answer* questions???
Peter L. Berghold

******

No.
How do you distinguish guys who sometimes do not post a summary from
ones, who never? What is a grace period? People can be very busy and
have no time to post the summary. What if they have not received any
answers? What if it was a *very* basic question ala 'how to find a list
of files in a directory?'. Do want this summary. And I definitely do not
want to see the list of these people. I would just delete without
looking. Do you also volunteer to solve disputes and maintain this
*feature*?
Thank you.
Eugene Kramer.

******

And include those who don't place the original question or for that
matter the results in their "Summary".
I have been guilty of not summarizing in the past when nothing useful
was received in the replies. Guess the "will summarize" should have the
qualifier "if useful info is returned" added.

Here's my vote for vote.
Tom Erickson

******

I vote yes! (Although once guilty myself). I'd be interested in a
submission total too, as it appears like there are a few using this as
an interactive man page and they seem to post daily!
Derek Eichele.

David --
I presume you'll summarize your findings :-)
I don't think it's worth the hassle of seeing who summarizes and who
doesn't -- or of seeing who posts what, or how much, or how often.
Frankly, I'd like for the newbies to head off to another list somewhere
so we can get some real answers really quickly instead of wading through
"how do I rm this file?" questions over and over. I'd also like to see
more folks read the FAQ; perhaps the list maintainers could set up
something so that anyone who hasn't posted before will be sent the FAQ
and a 'release key' to mail back before their [first] message will make
it out...
How about just asking for a summary whenever you respond to something,
or sending a note to someone asking for a summary if a while has gone
by?
:-D
David Thorburn-Gundlach

******

Sure, why not. This is supposed to be beneficial to all and I've seen a
lot I would to get answers for. Thanks!
Brent Parish

******

Yes! We must be a way to enforce summary.
Ning Zhang

******

David,
It might be better if you email the poster directly if you fail to see a
summary. I have on a couple occasions failed to summarize due to either
due to a lack of responces (Zero or fewer) or a lack of useful
information to post (only one responce, and it had no relavance on the
problem that happened to cure itself).
It might be better to hear the other side before you form a posse and
find the hangin' rope. I get enough noise in my mailbox without balck
lists and pointless summaries.
Rich Bajusz

******

Are you having some kind of ego trip or something? Do you think
anybody's going to check your stupid list before posting a response to
someone who needs help? This list is running fine the way it is,
occasionally somebody forgets to summarize, oh well, I don't think it's
hurting anybody.
Jon Mitchell

******

Yes and No. Consider this summary:
My original post:
I am new to Sun. What are the differences between SunOS and Solaris?
Summary:
The following 200 people responded:
...
Anchi

******

Sure. I learn a lot from the summaries...and when I don't get one, I
get cranky :-)
-Jason

******

David,
How would you know if they received a solution to summarize?
Rick

******

I think it's pointless. The quality of questions here has gone so far
downhill that I no longer bother to answer most of them; I'm quite tired
of trying to help people who won't RTFM. I think this mailing list is
pretty much cooked -- which is unfortunate, because on those rare
occasions when *I* need help, I can no longer turn to the other experts
who used to hang out here because they've been chased away, too.
---Rsk

******

Yes
Pamela L Johnson

how do you decide if they have ben bad enough to punish, and what level
of punishment. if the only summary is ' dumb question , this is already
answered in the FAQ' should that person say that as a summary and list
the 523 people who gave that answer. I haven't summarised one question
of mine yet since the summary is to repeat the question, as noone has
yet replied.

******

HI,
This is not a SCHOOL !!!!!! to chide the pupil...This is a fourm to
discuss and and share the unix/SUN information and not a Classroom...
I AM DEAD AGAINST SUCH IDEAS !!!!
Venkat

******

YES..
I HATE WAITING TO SEE THE ANSWERS...AND THEN THEY NEVER COME.
Roger McGraw

******

No I don't think so. What about the times when there are no responses or
all the people who reply just say 'I have the same problem too'. In
these cases there is no summary to send. Are you going to blacklist
these people? I think sun-managers is an excellent list. Yes there is
more noise these days from people asking questions rather than checking
the documentation first but I accept that.
Roy Culley

******

much as i dislike this kind of "strong arm" tactic, i'd have to agree
with you. if you want to ask a question, you owe the list a summary.
period. also, i think someone who is not a member of the list should not
be
allowed to post. hope this helps,
john

******

I vote no.
Sometimes a question is so obvious that a summary is not required. IE:
if the answer is in the faq. Who decides? You? How long would you wait
before determining a summary has not been posted? Perhaps the person got
no answers, it does happen some times. If a person is really interested,
they can ask the person posing the question directly for any responses
they got.
Regards,
Derek Mallard

******

My question:
Here is a proposal:
Do you think we should give those guys who only ask questions and never
make a summary little bit of punishment? - for example, put their names
in a list something like that? If you all say yes, I volunteer to do the
job.
