Question:
Netscape detected that I have a Netscape 3.03 for Solaris 2.6 on Sun
Sparc, and it suggested me to download Communicator 4.04 for Solaris
*2.6*. But the file Netscape gave me was Communicator 4.04 for Solaris
*2.5.1*. Why? and how to get Communicator 4.04 for Solaris 2.6?
Answer:
Netscape has not writting a port for 2.6 as of yet. You can still use
2.5.1's version of Netscape. Just make sure you set your "MOZILLA_HOME"
and "XKEYSYMDB" variables within your login shell file.
Set the "MOZILLA_HOME" to the directory in which you installed Netscape.
Set the "XKEYSYMDB" to the directory which netscape resides. The file is
"XKeysymDB (X Key Symbol DataBase).
For example: (sh)
MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape; export MOZILLA_HOME
XKEYSYMDB=/usr/local/netscape/XKeysymDB; export XKEYSYMDB
For ksh and bash:
export MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/local/netscape
export XKEYSYMDB=/usr/local/netscape/XKeysymDB
For csh and tcsh:
setenv MOZILLA_HOME /usr/local/netscape
setenv XKEYSYMDB=/usr/local/netscape/XKeysymDB
There is a "XKeysymDB" under /usr/openwin/lib/X11. Unfortunately this
KeySymbol file is very old and outdated. I do not know why Sun doesn't
update this file with the latest one.
Note:
I downloaded Communicator 4.04 for Solaris 2.5.1 and installed it on
Solaris 2.6 without big problem. I did not use the instruction above to
set variables. And I am too busy to study something not critical. So, I
summarize it anyway and leave it to someone else who may be interested
in.
Big Thanks:
