1. Partial Answer:
You can do the install in two steps, the first being to install to a
spool directory (by default the pkgadd program uses /var as the spool
        pkgadd -s /tmp/gcc -d <pkg-file>
        pkgadd -d /tmp/gcc

2. Questions:
