SUMMARY: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): SMTP-MAIL: died on signal 11

I recently posted a question about the following symptoms:

The following error message:
sendmail[22694]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): SMTP-MAIL: died on signal 11

And sendmail was constantly coring out (but the process remained
active) and lots of 0 length files were created in mqueue.

This was on a Sun running Solaris 5.3, sendmail v8.8.8 and bind v8.1.1.

Thanks to the following in helping me take a look at this

This is what came from the gdb traceback:

0 0xef696d98 in strlen ()
#1 0x6fa64 in __res_querydomain (name=0xefffa6a0 "",
    domain=0x72657374 <Address 0x72657374 out of bounds>, class=1, type=255,

This from truss output:

Despite seeing the problem area, I never figured out a way around
it and needed to get the problem resolved on a production system.
So, I ended up backing out Bind v8.1.1 (which was working fine on
its own until sendmail was upgraded to v8.8.8), installing Bind v4.9.6,
keeping sendmail v8.8.8, and everything was once again happy.

I'd still be interested if anyone who is running both Bind v8.1.1 and
Sendmail v8.8.8 (with db 1.85 for NEWDB support) under solaris has any
pearls of wisdom on this.
