The answer is yes! You can have a disk at ID 4.
I neglected to state the machine in question is running Solaris 2.4. If
probe-scsi can see the disk 'boot -r' should take care of reconfiguring
the kernel and creating the links /dev/(r)dsk/cNtNdNsN.
If probe-scsi or probe-scsi-all (for a machine with more than one scsi
bus) doesn't report the device then there is probably a hardware problem
with termination or cabling.
In my case I tried adding the disk to controller 1 then controller 0. I
swapped it out with a working disk. Nothing worked. I finally called the
vendor (Acropolis Systems). They said they had a problem with some 23 GB
units not having the SCSI id selector swith not being connected properly.
(Grrrr!). The default should be 0 but that's not working either. Looks
like it's time for an RMA number.
