SUMMARY 24 bit graphics card in 8 bit mode

Although I actually havent gotten any replies to my request heres the answer:
in .login I added this:
alias ow $OPENWINHOME/bin/openwin -dev /dev/fb defdepth 8
Which starts openwin in 8 bit graphics mode.
How you can verify: type the following command

#xdpyinfo | more

go to second page

look under Screen0, it looks like the below

screen #0:
dimensions: 1152x900 pixels (325x254 millimeters)
resolution: 90x90 dots per inch
depths (2): 1, 8
root window id: 0x29
depth of root window: 8 planes -------------------------> check is this 8
number of colormaps: minimum 1, maximum 1
default colormap: 0x21
default number of colormap cells: 256
preallocated pixels: black 1, white 0
