Thanks to Michael Hill who pointed me in the right direction of Info-Zip:
http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/

so I can create a PKZIP compatible archive on my Solaris 2.5.1 system,
and Chris Herborth who explained how to make it self-extracting (on
either a PC or Sun):
