Hello,

My origianl question was:

> I have got two processes that I would like to terminate. So I did a:
>
> kill -9 <pid1>
> kill -9 <pid2>
>
> But when I do a ps, these processes are still there! I am the owner
> of these processes, and I don't want to reboot the machine to bring
> them down ...( I thought a 9 signal will definitely kill a process ?!)

I was copying files from a cdrom which is located in a
remote site. Someone took the cd out from the cd drive
somehow, and so my copy is I/O blocking and cannot kill
the processes. Thanks to everybody who responsed:

        Michael Baumann <baumann@proton.llumc.edu>
        Torsten Huebler <torsten@indra.sachsenlb.de>
        Pascal Gaudette <pascal@viper.istar.ca>
        Tawanda Queen <trq96@acs.org>
