The most popular answer was a program called rtftohtml, found at:

     http://www.meb.uni-bonn.de/rtf/index.html

Another good option is XcRichText, a Motif widget that can be
used to view RTF files.

The distribution name is:
  XcRichText-1.5.tar.Z
and can be found on many ftp sites.
