To find out what version of sendmail you are running on your machine, login to
that machine then type "telnet your-machine-name 25"
and it will tell you.

(eg: on my machine, I type "telnet falcon 25")

Normally sendmail is installed as part of installing the operating system so it
is probably already installed on your machine (see comment above)

It is worth upgrading to sendmail 8.8.5 because the version that comes with the
Sun operating system is never up to date, and may have bugs which allow people
to break into your system.

For sendmail to work you should be able to resolve all hostnames you are sending
to.
eg: if this 2.5.1 box will be sending mail all over the world then you should
have DNS working so it knows how to find out where to send the messages.

----------------------------------------
A1) Somewhat like 8.6.
A2) There are good README's with the 8.8.5 distribution.
A3) No. I think you should do this for secruity reason. You should have at
least a c compiler like gcc version 2.6 or better.

Tony C. Wu <tonywu@life.nthu.edu.tw>
------------------------------------
A1) SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4
A2) Check the system and network administration guide
A3) Yeah, upgrade to sendmail v8.8.5 for better security and efficiency

Stephen Harris <sweh@mpn.com>
-----------------------------
A1) A buggy version.
A2) aliases are picked up vi /etc/nsswitch.conf "aliases" entry (to allow a
NIS+ alias map). Check if /usr/lib/sendmail.mx exists - if it does, then
rename that to /usr/lib/sendmail (old SunOS, Solaris needed this to use DNS
MX records). Then make /etc/nsswitch.conf "hosts" entry use DNS and NIS+.
This is not sendmail specific.
A3) yes yes yes yes yes! Old versions are full of security holes.

Alfredo Sola <adminsis@intelideas.com>
--------------------------------------
A1) Solaris 2.5.1 comes with SMI Sendmail 8.6.
A2) The best source is still Brian Costales' Sendmail, published by
O'Reilly & Associates.
A3) Definately yes. You get some new features and many bug fixes,
most related to security.

Michael Kohne <mhkohne@moberg.com>

A3) I personally believe it IS a good idea to update to the latest version of
sendmail. 8.8.5 has several security fixes that sun incorporated via
patches, and it also has the newer, much nicer, m4 based config files.

Karl E. Vogel <vogelke@c17.wpafb.af.mil>
-----------------------------------------
A3) Yes! Earlier versions have security problems.

Chris Marble <cmarble@orion.ac.hmc.edu>

A3) I certainly think it is. I have both Solaris and HP-UX boxes
and I'd hate to have to remember different sendmail stuff
