Hello admins,

Special thinks to all for answer/comment :

Original Question :
#############################################################
I am a newbie for solaris, now, I try to
setup a standalone workstation, for install patches

        Method A
        ---------
        1) install patches from cd
        2) then install patch cluster from sunsolve

        Method B
        --------
        - install patche cluster from sunsolve

Which one is better !? or the result is same.

All input will be greatly appreciated, I will summarize
#############################################################

Bertrand Hutin <hb@o2tech.fr>
-----------------------------
install the "suggested" patches for the patches cd

Mark <root@wisdom.maf.nasa.gov>
-------------------------------
I always use "Method B". The patch cluster should include the
patches from the CD.

Todd Boss <boss@netcom.com>
---------------------------
go straight from sunsolve....

the cd contains the patches that were current when the cd was pressed,
but patches on sunsolve or sunsite.unc.edu are current as of now. If
you do method A below you'll just be redoing work when you get updated
patches from sunsolve.

Bill <bfay@dallas.geoquest.slb.com>
-----------------------------------
latest release will be from sunsolve............

Matthew Stier <mstier@hotmail.com>
----------------------------------
Sun's policy is method A.

I've never seen a difference between the two.

Cheng, Bruce <Bruce.Cheng@Aspect.com>
-------------------------------------
It's better to install patch cluster from sunsolve.
The patch cluster should cover what's on the CD. (I think.)

But if you were to install any patches from solaris CD, you may
want to read the readme files to see if those patches are really what
you want.

For example, if the patches were related to NewsPrint and you do not
intend
to use news print then you may not want to install it.

Sunsolve patch cluster is usually pretty generic. I applied them to all
workstations/servers
I have here.

Last but not the least, install patches in single user mode. It's safer.
Make sure you have enough extra space on your disk befoe you run
install_cluster and
check the error messages (if any) carefully

Dan Brainard <brainard@ihs.com>
-------------------------------
Use the patch with the highest rev number. Usually that will be from
sunsolve. Check with the README's also, you may have to load a patch
from the cd to beable to load sunsolve patches.

When you're loading a new version of a patch, it's a good idea to
backout the old version, then apply the new version. You can delete the
old version's directory at a later date This will save space, and assure
you that the new patch has a clean slate to work with.

Glenn Satchell <Glenn.Satchell@Uniq.com.au>
-------------------------------------------
It's the same effect, the patch cluster is just a script that
installs the suggested set of patches.

Justin Young <justiny@cluster.engr.subr.edu>
--------------------------------------------
Install patch cluster from the CD, then install from Sunsolve. Some of
the patches on the CD are not available from sunsolve. You didn't say
which version of Solaris. I assume it's 2.4 or later.
