Thanks for the quick responses. It was unanimous that a lack of
memory was my problem. 48MB just doesn't cut it. I'm going to
add 64 MB and see what happens. The "sr" or "scan rate" field in
the vmstat output was the decisive factor for most people. If it is
in the hundreds that is your tip off that the system is searching
desperately for free pages of memory.
