---- Original Question ---------------------------------------------------
Hello there,

We run sol 2.5 here and we need to replace the old faulty backup tape
drive. What backup media would you suggest for 1-2 GB capacity, stable and
capable of random access ?

Thanks in advance for your time,
Tony

I've read jaz drives work great. That's 1 Gb. I'm pretty happy with
my 2 Gb HP tape.

Saludos,

Alfredo Sola.

I'd recommend a DDS-2 DAT drive, 4 GB uncompressed/8 GB compresssed
capacity (using 120m tapes), and quite cheap these days.

Hello Tony:

I use DDS-2 DAT drives, I currently run two of them. I use the 120 meter tapes, which gives me a compressed capacity of about 8 gigs or so per drive.

The random access depends on what software you are using.

I would opt for a 4 mm tape backup solution a DDS tape unit might be more expensive but better on the long run in reliability...there are many vendors for this - we usually get our stuff thru' Sun...

Hi.

I am not sure if any tape media is capable of random access. Special software such as legato can make the tape drive appears to be random accessible.

For 1-2GB capacity, you can get a decent Exabyte 8mm tape drive. Media is cheap and widely available. The drive is not too bad either. 4mm is not bad except that media is quite expensive.

Both 4mm and 8mm requires cleaning periodically to ensure data integrity.
