I received a lot of mail on this one. Most suggesting ~. or ATH.
These of course are fairly basic but worth suggesting (similar to
asking whether or not the modem is connected). Others had more
elaborate suggestions.
The final solution was to trash the $500 Motorola Codex and plug in
a $50 Hayes compatible. Now tip works like a champ. And the modem
hangs up when you close the xterm window. Modems are like life; the
simpler the better.
Thank you to everyone who tried to help. This is still the best
and fastest resource for UNIX help.
