*** ORIGINAL QUESTION
Has anybody out there used the "Power Management" feature with solaris 2.5?
(or any other version of solaris will do...)
What do you think of it? Worth installing?

*** ANSWERS

People said that it whether or not it was worth installing depended upon what
you wanted to use it for.
It only works with certain SPARC models that were manufactured after
a date specified in the documentation.

By default, the power management software puts the system to "sleep"
after ~30 minutes of inactivity at the console. However, it is configurable and
most people who replied were only using it to turn off their monitor after a
period of inactivity.
"The main effect of it seems to be to put the screen into an idle mode a bit
like the pseudo power off on a TV set".

Other comments were:

"Unless you are attempting to cut electricity costs, you might want to
consider the nuisance factor"

"Yes - on a Sparcstation 5 with 2.5 - it works o.k. but can be a little slow to
come back on after the w/s has been idle. "

"Probably would install it - at least it makes me feel as though I'm
doing something toward conservation and all that stuff."

"I looked at it briefly but decided against it since our workstations
do mail delivery and provide NFS services which would be unavailable
during the power conserve state. The only case I can see when
this would be useful is for diskless clients."

"It also appears to work well in conjuntion with APC's powerchute software if
you have APC Uniterruptable Power Supplies and want to shut things down if the
battery is getting low."

"...a friend of mine use the autoshutdown feature on his computer at home
and he is very satisfied with this too, because he mostly works in the
morning and in the evening at home."

Thanks again
Marina
