I had to configure the hosts line of /etc/nsswitch.conf to
query dns:
hosts: nis dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
^^^ add dns to this line
To test MX resolution:
/usr/lib/sendmail -bt
ADDRESS TEST MODE (ruleset 3 NOT automatically invoked)
Enter <ruleset> <address>
> /mx aol.com
